IKM-Manning CSD has contracted with Deluxe Driving Academy out of Carroll to provide a Driver Ed class taught at IKM-Manning High School. The next session of Driver Ed will begin on Monday, July 7.
Enrollment will be limited but there must be at least 15 students enrolled in order for the class to be offered.
Here are some things students should keep in mind before enrolling in Driver Ed:
1. If you don't have your Instructional Permit get it ASAP and begin driving with parent/guardian. A student must be 14 years of age and possess a valid Instruction Permit at least 10 days prior to the beginning of the session. It is strongly recommended that the student have several hours of driving experience in a variety of settings before enrolling in Driver Ed. Without prior driving experience, a student is not likely to be successful in Driver Ed.
2. Each student must complete 30 hours of classroom and 6 hour of behind-the-wheel time requirements for the course. It is important that a student be able to commit to attending all scheduled classes and driving sessions. There is very little ability to make up any time missed, therefore, students must be able to make Driver Ed a priority over other activities and commitments they may have during the time the class is held. There are no exceptions to the 30 hours of class time and 6 hours of driving time requirements. If you miss a class you will have to make the class time up by traveling to one of Deluxe Driving Academy's other class locations. You cannot miss and make up more than 2 classes. Typically they always have classes going in Carroll but classes may be available in Glidden, Audubon, or Atlantic as well.
3. Driving times (6 hours required) will take place as arranged by students and driving instructors. Driving schedules will be made the first day of class so students should bring calendars, schedules, etc. with them to class that day.
4. There is no advantage to taking Driver Ed when you are 14 unless you are eligible and intend to apply for a Minor School License (MSL). Also, students who are not eligible for a MSL should keep in mind that if they complete Driver Education more than a year before they turn 16 they will be required to drive with an examiner when they apply for their Graduated Driver License at age 16.
5. Driver Ed class enrollment will be limited with oldest students having priority. We need at least 15 students to enroll in order to be able to offer the course here at IKM-Manning.
6. Cost for the course will be $350. If you qualify for free/reduced school meals, there is a discounted rate available at $245.
7. The course is offered through a school partnership with Deluxe Driving Academy in Carroll. Their rules and regulations are included in the enrollment packet. Please read them carefully before enrolling.
8. Students who are interested should stop in the office and pick up an enrollment form and other necessary information including classroom dates. Please note that a photocopy of the student's instructional permit needs to be attached to the enrollment document. Your enrollment form, payment for the class, and copy of permit are due by Friday, May 9.
